First Woman Ascends to Top Drill Sergeant Spot

The reporter interviewed Command Sgt. Maj. Teresa L. King, the new drill sergeant; Willie Shelley, a retired command sergeant major who supervised Sergeant Major King; Patrick J. Jones, a public affairs officer at Fort Jackson; and Col. John E. Bessler, Sgt. Major King’s  commander in a basic training battalion four years ago.

He asked about her qualifications for the job, about her personal life, what kind of person she is, about women in the army.

He could of asked how she felt receiving this honor and more about the drill school.

The row of people creates a leading line. The repetition of students create a pattern. This picture also has a great depth of field.

Beat report #2

I got an email response from Melinda Kufeld on October 18. She said that at the next PTSA meeting, Mrs. Wittmer will give a college presentation. Student and parents who are not PTSA members are allowed to attend. They are still waiting on FUSD approval on special projects. They may need to submit these projects individually. Once they get approval, they will coordinate a make a difference day event. PTSA has made it a priority to ensure parents realize there will be no parent/teacher conference days this year and provide alternatives so they can stay abreast of their students progress. She also suggested featuring Jan’s Mock SAT exam along with Founders Day volunteer recognition.

I talked to Melinda Kufeld, PTSA president, on Sept 20. She said that PTSA is planning on installing lunchtime equipment (i.e. basketball courts, tetherball courts, and volleyball courts) soon. Also she told me that this year to increase student membership, student memebers get $6 in muffin money to be used during the brunch sales during finals and they get 50 % off the price of the mock SAT.

Former Newark Memorial students, each 17, identified in Fremont murder-suicide- http://www.insidebayarea.com/ci_13333958?source=most_viewed

The lead does tell the most important information because before people knew that two teenagers were involved in this murder-sucicide but officials hadn’t released their identities until now. It answers the who, what, where, and when questions.

My previous journalism experience include working on Parkmont Elementary school’s newspaper in the sixth grade. I interviewed teachers, covered two-square tournaments, and wrote movie reviews. I am a good writer and have been in Honors English since the seventh grade. I have experience interviewing people especially from doing the iSearch last year. I am also a good photographer. I love to express myself, but I know how to keep it proffessional, which I think is important in a journalism class.

I am excited to be part of Journalism this year and I hope to become a better writer. I also hope to meet some new people and get the chance to work with them. I hope that being part of the Hatchet will get me more connected with Washington High School. I fear going to different businesses and getting advertisements because I have never done that before. I also fear that I will become overwhelmed with the workload. I hope that I will learn to manage my time better. I also fear that I will not be able to write a story well enough. I hope journalism will increase my self-confidence in who I am and what I am capable of doing.
